Marilyn Sher
Independent Midwife
My Story
I was born to be a midwife.
When growing up if there was a baby around that was where you found me. My parents felt I should do general nursing first so that I could have something to fall back on. In those days you could do midwifery only as a course. I did general nursing and straight into midwifery and have stayed there many long years.
I worked in the government hospitals for 25 years as a result got lots of academic experience.
I became an Independent Midwife (one of the first in Johannesburg) and have practiced as one ever since.
Along the way I have encouraged many young midwives to become Independent Midwives.
In my private life my grandchildren are the centre of my life.
A colleague once said to me, “If the passion for midwifery goes, then you must stop.” The passion is still there. So I am still here. Through all my career, God has been my backup, and to Him I am very grateful.

My go-to tip for expectant moms:
When becoming pregnant, please try to maintain your current fitness level, as best as possible. It is not the time to embark on a new fitness journey. You are growing new life and new to be kind to yourself.

You'll always see me with:
In my private life my grandchildren are the centre of my life.

How I recharge:
Reading books is my go to relaxation.
